RNAO BPSO

In April 2018 The Wexford began its journey as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) pre-designate hosted by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). The home implemented three best practice guidelines (BPGs) over the next 3 years. These guidelines promote and support quality care for our residents and their families.

Benefits of the Best Practice Guidelines include:

  • Improve health care
  • Reduce the variation in care
  • Transfer research evidence into practice
  • Convey the knowledge base of nursing
  • Assist with clinical decision making
  • Identify gaps in research
  • Stop interventions that have little effect or cause harm

Chosen Best Practice Guidelines 2018-2021:

  1. Preventing Falls and Reducing Injury from Falls (2018-2019)
  2. Oral Health: Nursing Assessment and Interventions (2019-2020)
  3. Person and Family-Centred Care (2019-2020)

Preventing Falls and Reducing Injury from Falls:

This guideline was chosen to help identify adults who are at risk for falling and those who fall frequently. The guideline has recommendations that assist the home in making a plan to manage the number of falls in the home and reduce the risk of injury from a fall.

Oral Health: Nursing Assessment and Interventions:

This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on best practices related to oral health care. This guideline focuses on recommendations for assessing oral health, and strategies and interventions related to oral care.

Person- and Family-Centred Care:

The Person- and Family-Centred Care best practice guideline can be used to enhance the quality of partnerships between health-care providers with individuals. Person- and family-centred care focuses on the whole person as a unique individual and not just on their illness or disease. By viewing the individual in this way, health-care providers will better understand the person’s life, their experience of health, the role of family in the person’s life, and the role they may play in supporting the person to achieve health.

As a Long Term Care Best Practice Spotlight Organization (LTC-BPSO), The Wexford Residence will continue to partner with the RNAO to enhance and sustain an evidence-based practice culture. The goal is to continue to implement high quality care with active involvement from each member of the interdisciplinary team and in doing so, The Wexford hopes to continue to meet its deliverables to remain a Best Practice Spotlight Organization.

Oral Health: Supporting Adults Who Require Assistance:

This guideline provides nurses and the inter-professional team with evidence-based recommendations on oral care for the provision of oral care that will promote an inter-professional approach to providing oral care, enhance the delivery of oral care interventions, and ultimately lead to positive oral health outcomes for the resident. The Wexford will be building on the previous Oral Health BPG in order to improve the current oral health practices.
