Philosophy of Care
People are more than flesh and bone. Each of us has a spirit and a life that transcends an aging and frail frame. Wisdom and personal growth can also continue throughout life, if we are receptive to it.
The goal of Resident Care is to provide a dynamic living environment that assists seniors to continue to grow in love and acceptance, continue to contribute to those around them, and to find continued meaning and joy in life in spite of the challenges that may arise.
Inherent components of this “dynamic living” include the following:
- respect for the uniqueness of each individual and their personal worth;
- provision of a loving environment, which radiates a sense of acceptance and belonging, of neighbourhood and a secure community;
- respect for individual religions, cultures and languages;
- a variety of programs and activities, recreational, social and spiritual that will provide stimulation, interaction, and enhancement of one’s coping skills;
- guidance in ways to maintain good health and independence;
- seniors’ involvement in decision making, both regarding their personal care, and the management of the facility;
- adequate security and safety both physically and emotionally;
- an inter-disciplinary team which builds on areas of strength and supports areas of weakness to maintain maximum level of independence;
- provision of high quality food services, with recognition of the nutritional requirements and social needs of residents;
- an energetic, creative staff who are supported in their drive for excellence;
- support and guidance to families to enhance their ongoing supportive role for residents particularly in decisions around, and in the provision of, care.
Resident Care is an opportunity to assist vulnerable seniors to experience some of the joy that is possible with the abundance of years in spite of disability. This is accomplished through opportunities for new things: adventures of the heart, mind and spirit. Universal experience suggests that a growth of spiritual energy gives life new intensification. The calm joy that comes with it can be quite enriching.
